Marine's play about the war – "The Sand Storm" – based on experience in Iraq

NEW YORK – On September 12, 2001, after watching the terrorist attacks on America unfold, Sean Huze enlisted in the Marines to help defend America. After spending the first half of 2003 in Iraq with the Marines of 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Huze came back home, desperate to tell the stories of the people he met and experiences he was a part of. He did so, the only way he knew how – he wrote a play about it.
Consisting of monologues spoken by ten different Marines, Huze's play, "The Sand Storm: Stories from the Front," is an honest, straightforward, and brutal report from the front.
After an initial short run in Los Angeles last year, The Sand Storm will be produced again, in conjunction with Operation Truth. The piece will be directed by award nominated Dave Fofi, himself a Navy veteran.
"Huze's play is another important component in our mission to get the troops who fought in the current wars heard," said Paul Rieckhoff, Executive Director of Operation Truth.
"Sean doesn't sugarcoat anything about the war, and that's the way it should be. His play is real and raw – the same as a service member's mind is while in a war zone. People need to see this play, and Operation Truth is honored to help."
"The Sand Storm" is based on the war as experienced by some of the Marines of 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. They fought through Nasirya, Al Kut, Baghdad, Tikrit and many places in between. Their accounts of the war, related in ten chilling monologues, expose the rage, honor, courage, commitment, doubt, fear, and remorse experienced by the men who followed their orders and accomplished every mission they received. These men earned the name of 'Destroyers' from the Iraqi opposition and were among the most feared units the Iraqis encountered.
"The Sand Storm: Stories from the Front" will run March 18 – April 23, 2005, on Thu, Fri, & Sat @ 8 at the Elephant Asylum Theater, 6322 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90038. All seats are $20, with some discounts available. For tickets, call Plays411 at (323) 960-4410 or visit www.plays411.com/sandstorm .
