SGT Justin F. Clemons served in Iraq with the 938th ENG DET (Fire Fighters). Here he provides background for photos which chronicle the training of firefighters at Mosul Airport.
"We were attached to the 326 ENG BGD of the 101st Airborne Division. We were assigned to Camp Diamondback, Mosul Airfield, Mosul, Iraq. We were in Mosul from May 3 2003 to Jan 7 2004, when we were transferred to al Taqquddum Airfield near al Habiniab (Fallujah) to cover the 82nd Airborne Divisions airfield there until we left in March 2004.
When we first arrived in Mosul they pointed to a large field covered in waist high grass and said "you will live there". As you can see we fixed it up a bit. We lived in tents nearly the whole time.

This was the first day that they got to wear their blue jumpsuits. They were all so excited that is was funny, the sad part about it is some of them had never owned a "NEW" pair of clothes before.

Controlled burn. We soon learned the Iraqi insurgants understood cause and effect. They would start a fire, we would put it out. It does not take a rocket scientist to realize that leads to a bad ending (for us). so we burned off the perimeter to help the force protection guys AND to prevent us getting shot at again on a fire call. Reality dictates that it is difficult, if not impossible to hold a fire hose in one hand and a rifle in the other. We did not have the man power to pull our own security and fight fires at the same time.
