In tonight’s State of the Union address, President Bush should call on Congress to pass a modern GI Bill that actually pays for the cost of college.

The original GI Bill, signed by President Roosevelt in 1944, sent eight million World War II veterans to college. Every dollar spent on the GI Bill added seven dollars to the national economy. Sadly, the educational benefits available to veterans are far inferior to what the Greatest Generation received.

A new GI Bill would help stimulate the U.S. economy and go a long way toward helping our newest generation of heroes build a better life. Educating our country’s veterans was the right thing to do after World War II, and it is the right thing to do now.
